Some customers have also installed PVC ceiling tiles over existing popcorn ceilings. The existing surface should be evaluated and properly prepared before installation.

Glue-Up Installation

Colorado PVC ceiling tiles with overlapping edges can be installed on a clean, hard, smooth surface using an appropriate rubber- or urethane-based adhesive.

We recommend testing the installation method and adhesive on a small area or sample before beginning the entire project. Allow the test installation to rest for at least 24 hours so you can evaluate the appearance, adhesion, and suitability for your particular application.

For adhesive, we have used products such as DAP Weldwood Original Formula Contact Cement Gel and Loctite Power Grab All Purpose Construction Adhesive.

Contact cement generally provides very rapid adhesion. Loctite Power Grab All Purpose Construction Adhesive provides additional time to position and adjust the tile before the adhesive sets.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the adhesive you select.

Grid or Suspended Ceiling Installation

Colorado PVC ceiling tiles can also be used with appropriate grid or suspended ceiling systems.

For glue-up applications using overlapping edges, the tile extends approximately 24.5″ x 24.5″, allowing an overlapping edge of approximately ¼ inch.

When used as a drop-in tile in a suspended grid system, the intended design area is approximately 24″ x 24″. Standard ceiling-grid dimensions can vary, so always measure the existing grid before ordering and confirm that the selected tile is appropriate for your application.

Cutting and Trimming

PVC ceiling tiles can be cut or trimmed when necessary to fit around walls, corners, fixtures, or other obstructions.

Depending on the cut required, the material can be trimmed using scissors or a box cutter.

Always measure carefully before cutting.

How Many Design 222 Ceiling Tiles Do I Need?

Each 24″ x 24″ tile covers approximately 4 square feet.

We recommend allowing an additional 10% to 15% for cutting, fitting, mistakes, and installation waste.

For example, a room measuring 10 feet by 10 feet has 100 square feet of ceiling area.

Allowing 15% for waste:

100 square feet × 1.15 = 115 square feet

115 ÷ 4 square feet per tile = 28.75 tiles

Round up to 29 tiles.

The actual quantity required will depend on the dimensions and configuration of your particular installation.

Installation Instructions for Overlapping-Edge PVC Ceiling Tiles

1. Prepare the Surface and Plan the Installation

PVC ceiling tiles should be installed on a hard, smooth, clean surface.

Clean the ceiling or installation surface thoroughly and remove loose plaster, paint, wallpaper, grease, oil, or other residue. The surface should be reasonably smooth and even.

Measure the room and plan the tile layout before applying adhesive.

Many installers begin by locating the center of the room and establishing straight reference lines. A chalk line can be used to create the starting point and maintain alignment.

Have your materials and tools ready, including:

• Measuring tape
• Straight edge
• Scissors
• Box cutter
• Cleaning cloth or moist sponge
• Appropriate adhesive

We strongly recommend testing the installation and allowing the test area to rest for at least 24 hours before proceeding with the entire project.

2. Apply the Adhesive

Apply an appropriate adhesive to the back of the PVC ceiling tile, concentrating on the edges and raised portions of the tile as recommended for the particular adhesive being used.

If using contact cement, allow the adhesive to reach the appropriate tack or drying stage specified by the manufacturer before positioning the tile.

Applying adhesive to both the tile and ceiling may improve bonding and strength when appropriate for the adhesive being used.

As a general example, approximately one gallon of adhesive may cover about 75 tiles, or approximately 300 square feet, when adhesive is applied to both the tiles and the ceiling. Actual coverage varies by adhesive, surface, and application method.

Always follow the adhesive manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Place and Press the Tile

Place the first tile at your planned starting point.

Press the tile firmly but gently into position. For overlapping-edge installation, overlap the edge of the previous tile and press the adjoining edges into place.

Continue across the first row, maintaining alignment, and then work toward the sides of the room.

Take care to avoid getting adhesive on the visible surface of the ceiling tile.

4. Protect the Finished Surface

Contact cement and other adhesives can leave marks on the visible surface of PVC ceiling tiles.

Avoid getting adhesive on the finished face of the tile. Adhesive residue can be difficult to remove, and some solvents may affect or distort the finish or color.

Follow the adhesive manufacturer’s recommendations for cleanup.

Important Installation Considerations

Because ceiling construction, surfaces, grid systems, adhesives, environmental conditions, and installation methods vary, customers should evaluate their particular project before installation.

Always measure the existing ceiling or grid, test the installation method and adhesive, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for all installation materials.
